The Specificity of Hydrogen Bonds in Water

A specific manifestation of hydrogen bonding in the structural and thermodynamic properties of liquid water has been analyzed. Based on a particular molecular structure of water, a novel mechanism for water dimer formation and the concurrent emergence of hydrogen bonding has been proposed. It was found that the characteristic angles of a water dimer are in good agreement with experimental data. It was demonstrated that the discrepancy between the coexistence curves of water and argon is caused by short-range hydrogen bonds available within the whole interval of water existence in the liquid state. It has been proven that the absence of longrange hydrogen bonds in water is associated with the instability of their transverse thermal excitations. Characteristic temperature values for liquid water were examined.
