Abstract

A review of experimental facts and theoretical hypotheses, which resulted in the appearance of a new branch in our knowledge, semiconductor science, at the beginning of the 20th century, has been made. Johann K¨onigsberger is shown to be the first who put forward the idea of semiconductors as a separate class of substances in 1914 on the basis of the original hypothesis about the “dissociation mechanism” of conductivity. The priority of the Ukrainian scientist Vadym Lashkaryov in the discovery of a p–n-junction, which forms the basis of modern electronic devices, has been demonstrated.
